Sumario: Introduction: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) occurs when a person suffers trauma that directly
or directly affects the brain, causing an interruption in its normal functioning. This problem is
considered increasingly worrying worldwide in terms of public health. For TBI survivors,
functional disability poses a significant physical and emotional challenge to both the family and
the state. Objective: to identify predictors of gait recovery in patients with TBI up to 12 months
after the trauma, admitted to the Vitória Urgency and Emergency Hospital. Methods: An
observational prospective cohort study was carried out at the Urgency and Emergency
Hospital, in which 470 patients met the eligibility criteria to participate in the research, between
the years 2021 and 2023, they were evaluated in the areas of mental state and functionality
at 6 moments, ICU admission, ICU discharge, Hospital discharge, 3, 6 and 12 months after
the injury. Results: The median age was 40 (29; 55.2), 396 (84%) of the patients were male,
43% of the sample had high school education. Regarding the analysis of gait with the severity
of the TBI, 100% of patients who had independent gait suffered mild TBI, in relation to
discharge from the ICU, 90.5% of cases of mild TBI achieved independent gait at hospital
discharge. 85.3% of patients who demonstrated independence in self-care and activities at
RLA discharged from the ICU achieved functional gait. ECT trunk control at ICU discharge,
100% of patients who showed good control, acquired independent walking. Conclusion: It
was observed that patients who suffered head trauma of moderate to low intensity achieved
independent gait upon discharge from the ICU and hospital, also showing that trunk control is
a predictor for the patient to achieve independent gait, the state of consciousness it is also
related to gait recovery. These data apply to periods of 3, 6 and 12 months after the trauma
suffered.
