Sumario: Introduction: After a stroke, most individuals experience restrictions on social
participation. Objective: To investigate whether pre- or post-stroke factors can
accurately predict participation at 3 and 6 months after stroke. Methods: A prospective
cohort study with 3-time measurements, immediately, and 3 and 6 months after stroke,
was conducted. Adults with a recent diagnosis of stroke ( 7 days) were included. The
outcome of interest was social participation at 3 and 6 months after stroke. The
predictors were divided into pre-stroke factors (age; activity/participation;
environmental factors and mobility) and post-stroke factors (mobility; cognition;
depression; functional independence; social support, and self-efficacy). Results: A
total of 251 participants (129 men) were included. The equation to predict participation
3 months after stroke was named P-3: Participation (y) = 25.10 - (5.81 x mRS) + (1.20
x SSEQ-B) (R2=0.26). The sensitivity of P-3 equation was high (93%; 95% CI 0.78 to
0.99), the specificity was low (29%; 95% CI 0.15 to 0.97), the positive predictive value
(PPV) was moderate (54%; 95% CI 0.39 to 0.68), and the negative predictive value
(NPV) was high (83%; 95% CI 0.52 to 0.98). The equation to predict participation 6
months after stroke was named P-6: Participation (y) = 64.04 + (0.29 x Participation 3
months) - (4.33 x mRS) - (1.40 x Braztel-MMSE) + (0.21 x LSA) (R2=0.48). The
sensitivity of P-6 equation was high (100%; 95% CI 0.88 to 1), the specificity was low
(23%; 95% CI 0.10 to 0.41), the PPV was moderate (55%; 95% CI 0.40 to 0.68), and
the NPV was high (100%; 95% CI 0.59 to 1). Conclusions: This study provided simple
equations that predict participation 3 and 6 months after stroke, based on data
collected early after stroke. The equations will help clinicians to accurately identify
individuals susceptible to being restricted to their homes after stroke. Ethics approval:
